As Norm says, solder and heat sink sleeving, Frank when you solder a copper core wire the heat tends to anneal the copper not make it brittle, but on any joint if left unsupported the weak point is right next to the joint this is where the heat shrink helps.

Thanks guys for the replies. In the end I went with Alan R suggestions of the block connector with the screws. Which is working a treat.
