Rooster - +1 for Dennis C's excellent advice - it sounds like you may have a charging problem. Also check your main earth lead very carefully; mine simply fell apart one day... I replaced the original battery on my 2002 ES Bullet a couple of years ago as I felt it couldn't possibly last much longer... I still have it in the shed and at 11 years old it still holds a charge well enough for testing bulbs and the like.

Thanks for the info John. Just how reliable is the voltage reg. Is there a better one on the market. I fitted an electronic one to my Matchless and it works a treat 6volt or 12 volt.

I haven't heard of many charging problems with Electras, only 2 that I know of. The 3 phase alternator seems to be pretty good

My Electra X reg/ rect started playing up a while back. Either the charge would cut out completely or it would overcharge spiking up to 16v. I replaced it with a Power Box which smoothed the whole thing out. Similar price to an original unit, if I remember correctly.

Good info to know Frank, that the Boyer will handle the single and 3 phase alternators

Norm It's a different unit, made for the 3 phase. Same cost though.

I checked the charging system last night and it seems ok, (14.3 volts). I also charged the battery to 14.4 volts and the engine started no bother. this morning it would not turn the engine and the headlights were very dim. Definately points to a dud battery. Thanks for all the info.

Well yes Rooster, unless you have a leak somewhere. You could try leaving it charged overnight disconnected.
