tsflyer, a couple of days ago I cleaned a pilot jet, wire through every hole had the bike running several times and then problems starting again. Ended up pulling the carb again and sure enough a little bit of graveley stuff came out of the jet, no idea where it came from, put it back together and all was good again

It`s not good practice to push wire through a jet, a piece of straw from a straw broom if available will not scratch the inside of a jet like a wire will; then there will be no scoring in there to interfere with the flow.

Tsflyer - "I just find TDC by feel and ease past before kicking". After you have done this but BEFORE you try to start the engine press on the pedal another 1/4 to 1/2 distance (you will have to experiment for the exact distance) and THEN kick start the bike. Do it this way and you will be kick-starting the engine THROUGH the compression/ignition phase, and all being well this will start the engine. If you simply "just find TDC by feel and ease past before kicking" the piston could well be stopping before the compression/ignition stroke - this could be why it is not starting. So, this is the procedure - 1) Find TDC. 2)Ease past TDC. 3) Gently press on pedal another 1/4 to 1/2 distance. 4)Now start the engine. Good luck!!!

My way is 2 induction kicks with a air filter cap on and then the big kick which starts it's throw at 2/3rds of it's power stroke , wetting the plug like this is because my Amal MK2 choke is way too rich for Sydney and wont work .

Thanks to ed.lazda and PeteF! I think I got my bullet's starting drill down. It definately likes the "whiff" of throttle...slightest bit held steady. My new drill is 2 prime kicks with ignition off, then ignition on AND enricher on for first kick. I'll get the sputter on this first kick, then enricher off and with the "whiff" of throttle, she'll kick right over and quickly warms to tick over.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
