I'm going to convert a 2006 Bullet from A/C headlight to D/C headlight. I think I have worked out a fairly simple way of doing it but until I do it I won't know for sure. Keep you posted as to how it works out. I have done a couple before but they were pretty much a complete rewire to begin with, this one is just a conversion

That's just what I'd like to do with my 2003 model. I really dislike the dim headlight at low revs. I'll look out for your updates.

Hi Allan, it isn't too difficult to get it to run a D/C headlight. First it needs a Boyer powerbox or similar rec/reg unit capable of handling the higher output. Then it is a case of joining the wires from the alternator before they go into the conectors above the oil tank, a purple to orange and the other purple to the yellow. Run the motor and read the voltage input into the battery. Then swap the yellow and orange wires on the purples and run the motor again and read the input to the battery, one will be higher than the other, set the wires up using the higher reading combination. Solder and heatshrink these wires and then you have max power going into the battery. Next step is to disconect the A/C regulator and with a spade conector conect the yellow wire to a power source. This can be done by runing a wire from it through a fuse to the + of the battery but my preferance is to run this through a relay, triggered from the brake light switch so that with the ignition off there is no unswitched power going to the handelbar headlight switch. Hope this helps

Thinking about it a relay is the only way to do it so you don't forget and leave the lights on

Ended up being reasonably simple, cconect the stator wires together, fit a relay triggered from the brake light switch and powered into the yellow wire where the A/C reg was plugged in

Argh! Just wrote a long and pithy posting about the ease and simplicity of repairing a mag. And how they are a vital part of the originality of an old machine but the bloody iPad ate it! Suffice it to say that the cost of repairing a mag isn't a whole lot more than the cost of the alternative and the mag looks better. Moreover a rewound mag with a new ceramic condenser will throw a massive spark that would wake the dead! Now I'm going to hurl this piece of Steve Jobs created mank in a corner and sulk.

Thanks for the info, Norm. Does your method affect the operation of the existing light switch? Pete Snidal's notes on DC lighting conversion seems to suggest a separate light switch is needed, if his wiring mods are used. Pete's mods look to be similar to yours.

Hi Allan, I had no idea that Pete Snidal had done an article on it probably because I have never seen his book, only just heard about it. No new switch required everything works as normal, I used a relay where he may have used a switch. Relay is much better, ignition off, power to the headlight switch is off otherwise if you leave the switch on and you will, you leave a constant power on in the loom. Probably doesn't matter because that was how the English Enfields were wired and I don't think it caused too many to burn

Hi Norm. Thanks for the clarification. I think I'll tackle the rewiring shortly, when I do a partial strip to fit a 5-speed gearbox.
