This was brought home to me last night.. Motoring across Dartmoor in the cool evening air, after the heat of the day was just blissful..

Downhill the road undulates in a left swing and over a slight hump back bridge... 60mph and the bike just leaves the ground.. whoopee

An almighty noise from somewhere under the seat... sheeeeit BIG END>>>MAIN BEARINGS>>>>PISTON. Oh NNNooooo...

Sounding like a blacksmiths shop i pulled into a little lay-by and switched off... The silence was deafening.... Scanned the crankcases, no holes, no oil,

Thankyou God.. Back down towards the rear wheel, hang on the chain guard shouldn't be that shape... The bracket fixing to the rear end had broken and the guard had dropped onto the chain, then bent to a skyward angle...Not to bad thinks i, 13mm spanner and off with the front bracket, remove the wreckage and sling it...

Not quite, the guard front bracket won't clear the wheel. Ok remove the wheel.. on your own is difficult without blocks under the main stand to increase height...

Sooo remove seat, loosen mudguard brackets and lift mudguard up and clear as wheel pulled out... What a parlather, the remnants of the chain guard simply falls to the floor as the wheel comes out.... Would it have been easier to call the AA and be trailered home?? thinks i, i'd better call her ladyship and explain delay... punch in the number and the screen says

CANNOT DIAL.. NO Bleedin signal... So moral is carry the gear required to at least remove seat, tank, wheels and you should be ok... Started up Ernie in the failing light and once more listened to the comforting exhaust bark as we clattered away home... gwilly

I'm glad I had this spark tester and mini test meter in me bag yesterday as using this I was able to rule out and confirm most things in minuets. Well worth carrying in tool kit

A useful spare if you're doing any off roading, even light work, is a spare clutch lever. If you are using the pressed steel ones it's not an issue but even good quality alloy ones break off easily. If the levers are interchangeable left and right so much the better but the clutch is the one you really need!
