Yes I too have fitted the stiffener although I normally advocate leaving things alone that are not broken. ..... Result - g/box cover no longer flexes therefore clutch movement increased, seems easier to shift around 1st, neutral & 2nd. ... not been in much traffic yet to see if there is any improvement there.

After reading these comments I thought I would check to see if my gearbox cover flexed when the clutch was operated and sure enough it did-not much, but discernable to the naked eye. So I ordered our Hosts little gadget and have just spent a pleasant hour fitting it. Why am I telling you this? Because I didn't order it until after 4 o/clock yesterday afternoon and it was on my doormat this morning! Amazing service yet again.

Hey folks - I fitted the strengther on Sunday which was a very straightforward job!
However, I discovered this piece of metal sitting loosely at the bottom of the gearbox casing

I believe it has snapped from where it is circled in red, and as far as I can tell from the parts diagram it looks like NO. 2. Things is, although I had problems with jumping out of 3rd gear occassionally, the gearbox worked (as well as it could) with the broken clip - no idea how long it has been like that. I should probably get a replacement soon, but the question is... will any more damage be caused by running with out it for a few day? All comments welcome!

Cheers Nor4m - that'd explain why it keeps slipping out of gear! New spring has been ordered... looks like I'll have to do a bit of research in order to fit it... this is new territory for me. Any good tips?

I don't think the gearchange would work at all with the spring broken. Perhaps a previous owner overlooked the broken bit when he changed the spring.

Cheers PeteF - the bike came to me with 16km on the clock as it had been sitting in the south of Spain for 10 years before the previous owner acquired it - he never rode it at all, just changed a few things like the seat, tank, etc. I'm guessing the spring has been broken about a week or two, when I noticed gears were jumping, but it still works... I have 2 days off from tomorrow so hopefully our hosts will deliver promptly and then I can fit the new spring.

Hi Peter, the main thing to note when pulling it to bits is the position on the adjuster (number 57)plate in its slots. It can give you problems with gearchanges otherwise. Also check as Peter said before you pull it to bits it could be an old bit of spring so see if the existing spring has 2 legs holding onto the f/c lever short (inside) number 69 in the book. If it does as long as it changes gear leave it alone
