I have problems with my lights again on my 2008 sixty-5, should i switch from reg/rect units to a power box?? i note there is not much difference in cost for the units, is it a straight swap or will i need to do anything else??

Go for it Ian... I did mine last year and haven't looked back since - easy wiring and of course loads of knowledgeable folk on here to help you out! You can even run it without a battery.

Peter, I would be surprised if you could run lights without a battery, every time you drop to idle it will cut out even using a Wassel high output alternator. Iam, main thing is to find out what the lighting problem is, headlight is run directly from alt, is the headlight the problem or is the tailight the problem, tailight is running off the battery? We need more info.

i have replaced the little lighting regulator but its gone again, so i suspect it is the regulator/rectifier units, but to replace these will cost the same price (near enough) as the power box. People have already told me the reg/rec units are unreliable so if it is a direct swap sounds like a no brainer. I'm not bothered about running without a battery and as mine is electric start i'd still need one anyway.

While were on that subject, if i run 2 6v batteries to give 12v will they be powerful enough to power the starter motor? purely aesthetics but i want to run one of the old style lucas battery boxes.

Ian one problem at a time and stick with what you know and don't complicate matters. If you don't have a multimeter you need one now You have 2 totally separate charging systems AC/for headlight and D/C to charge the battery If you have blown the A/C reg you have no option to replace it (how do you know it is blown), fitting a Boyer has nothing to do with this. Is the battery charging and if so what volts is it reading at about 2000rpm. As you are only using 3 of the coils in the alternator the standard rec/reg unit is fine, but remember you might go through a couple of Indian rec/reg units before you get a good one. I have seen brand new ones just smoke up as soon as the switch is turned. You take your chances with any Indian products

the headlight wont work, the bulb is fine ( it lights if i hold the pilot light wires against it) the tail light works too. i previously replaced the little headlight acdc regulator (part no 143777) and this did the trick, however this has now blown again so im assuming its the regulator/rectifier which is cauisnt the regulator to blow.

Ian once again I will try and explain, 2 wires from the alt go to the A/C regulator it has nothing to do with D/C the headlight is run off A/C the other 2 wires go to the rec/reg unit and feed D/C into the battery these wires are not interconnected

Hi Ian. I would go with the powerbox, fitted it to one of my bullets and will be fitting it to the other sometime soon. No you won't get enough power to start the bike with 2 6 volt batteries in series that will fit into the dummy box. The most you will get is about 5ah and you minimum you need is 11ah.

Pale rider, can you please explain to me the advantage of fitting a Boyer powerbox to an E/S Bullet The powerbox is a brilliant piece of kit but I feel wasted on an alternator using only three coils and probably putting out no more than 40 watts?

Hi Ian, I have a 1995 bullet 500 export and the original reg/rectifier used to boil the battery and then it died , I bought a genuine upgraded reg/rec and it did the same and only lasted a few months so I finaly got the Boyer power box and fitted it in the toolbox with a computer mother chip heat sink with many fine fins and created a air intake and exhaust ( warm air )vent coupled together with heat sink zinc compound and a tiny 12 volt fan and it is incredible in the change to the charging system ,
no flickering lights and the battery gets the right trickle charge , the ammeter is far more indicative of whats going on and with elecronic ignition type 200001A I can forget about it bar checking battery level once a month , best electrics mod so far .
