put the gearbox back together after putting new seals in it. won't shift. what (in order of most to least probable) did I screw up when putting it back together? the bike is a left hand shift. the linkage from the left side of the bike to the lay shaft moves when I try to shift (as does the lay shaft). the neutral finder mechanism moves but does not seem to allow any movement at the foot operating lever. could the lever have slipped off the gear operator? don't really want to open it up again if you think the problem is outside of the gear box. frustrating as the bike is now running great after the enging rebuild, but can't ride.

pulled the stop plate off and tried to turn the foot operating lever, but it won't budge. does that help any with the assessment?

Dean, I'm tipping the lever isn't on the gear operator so you will have to remove the cover again. A conversion to right shift would be a good move, far less problems with those stupid linkages that could also be part of the problem, if not now in the future

thanks Norm - as I just put it back together, do I need to be concerned with the gasket resealing when I put the end cover back on?

It looked like the operating lever was on the gear operator when I put it together. Should I be doing anything special to make sure it doesn't come off again? After I put it together the gearbox did shift a couple times and then I heard a loud clank and that's when I lost shifting ability.

Dean,
I usually don't use a gasket but if you have one a wipe of sealer on each side will stop any leaks, they don't usually leak from this face. When you remove the cover hold the end of the mainshaft in position and use the gear operator to see if it slips through the gears ok. Nothing in particular that you have done wrong, sometimes things lock up and after reassembly it works ok and the more you pull the gearbox cover off the better you get at it. One other thing to check, even before you pull the cover, try moving the adjuster plate from one end of the slots to the other and with the rear wheel off the ground rotate it slowly whilst shifting through the gears. With the ratchet cover plate off you can actually see the ratchet pick the gear up and select it or not select as the case may be

took the end cover off and have run the gearbox through a few gear changes by manually working the gear operator. Am I good to go, or do I need to look for anything else prior to putting the cover back on.

Hi Dean, all you can do is give it a try, they are a pain because you just can't fit the shifter and see if it works because of that bobo left shift arrangement

Thanks Norm, will give it a try and let you know. One more thing, does the inner ratchet fit with the teeth pointing up? I believe that is how it came out, but wanyted to be sure, as the parts got a bit messed up this time around.
