Hello DENNI,---- Bit unfair on the workforce at H&W in Belfast, but I know what you mean....Alas, we're not experts---- just fellow riders and enthusiasts, much like you, with only our combined experiences to offer......OK, that said let's have another think ??..The Electra X has the "Mk1" 5-speed gearbox I believe the same as fitted to the Bullet Sixty Five ??.. I ran a Sixty Five for a couple of years and from what I can remember its' operation is based on the use of a rotating cam plate that actuates rollers connected to sliding forks which engage/dis-engage the sliding dog-clutch and appropriate gear wheels for selection..So from that it can bee seen that it's impossible to OVERTHROW any sliding gear...So perhaps it's not fully engaging ?? On the edge of the cam plate are a series of indents that, in conjunction with a spring-loaded plunger, keep the selector mechanism at whichever gear has been selected..A weakening spring here might be the problem.....Similarly the gear lever has a coil spring that centralises it after use... This also might be the problem...Have you given our hosts a call for a chat ??
