Hi Jenks - to answer your original question (which a lot of people seem to ignore) I would hang on a bit. Wait and see the long term reliability of the new engine - Grunda has mentioned a worn out efi at 15,000. Is that going to be common or an exception. I would want to know the answer before I spent my hard earned cash. I am considering the swap myself as the extra cruising speed would be an advantage over my 350 iron barrel but as my bike is totally reliable and well sorted there is no need to rush in. To be honest the indian web sites are not giving me confidence in the quality of the new bikes.

Rustygman - I'm not sure the EFi would give you more cruising speed - those I've ridden are happy at 55 mph, about the same as a a good 350

Sorry Presto - should have clarified - I suspect the cruising speed would only be a few mph higher but the extra torque would help with a pillion and the alloy barrel would be better for sustained cruising speeds. Whether that is worth the extra few grand I very much doubt.

Hi Jenks, I have just read your comments about changing your bike, I have a BSA Thunderbolt as well as my EFI, it's a lovely bike , but it has cost me a great deal of money over the past few years.and although a sizable bike it's old, it has a completely rebuilt engine, one, it doesn't handle as well as my EFI and two not as comfortable.
I get on my EFI with as much confidence as you can have that I could do a long journey with out breaking down, If you enjoy riding and want to go places get an EFI.
Out of interest how many miles could I expect to do on my EFI with out a major overhaul ???

Jenks I forgot to mention , a week ago I rodefrom Watford , Herts to Padstow , Cornwall. I took a long scenic route, 320 miles. I returned in five days completing 740 miles. had the bike cruising at about 60 MPH on main roads , other wise just enjoyed the ride. What a great bike. Titch

just a note ,the five speed box on the efi is a very near relative to the five speed box in an electra except its in unit fashion the clutch of course is a bettter piece of kit although the bearing the pushrod runs through is a bodge in my book as i,ve said elsewhere the sprag clutch is the same item as the electra the alloy barrel is the same style as the electra alloy with steel liner basically the difference between an efi is unit construction coupled with injection instead of carb ,loads of sensors and poor wiring so as to the origional thread keep the electra less to go wrong in my book although if you want a better enfield buy a iron barrelled classic 500 the best of the bunch in my opinion ,especially with a nice chinese cement mixer engine fitted!! disrespect the last comment i,m biased happy days paul.
