got the guts back in the gearbox and ready to put the end cover back on but the main shaft hanging up on the main shaft bearing. Seems like a very tight fit and I am leary to use too much force. Would it be acceptable/feasible to remove the mainshaft, seat it to the bearing in the end cover and then guide it back into the main sleeve shaft whilst working the end cover on the gear box case? If not, any pearls on how to get this accomplished would be appreciated.

Also, should I be using bearing fit on the bearing facings to the shafts, or just on the bearing surface to the casing?

Dean, try using a hot air gun to heat the bearing. You shouldn't need bearing fit anywhere by the way! REgards, Mark

Hot as possible really. A blowlamp will do it but probably burn off some oil. A paint stripper gun is what I use. As a last resort you could stick the outer cover in the oven? Make sure you know who is out!!! REgards, Mark

What about fit the bearing to the shaft first and check the fit...

Refit shaft with bearing attached then warm the inner case and offer to the bearing outer if need be.

Dont forget bearing seal maybe plastic..... unless steel on some, but anyway i wouldnt heat a new bearing.

The bearing seal appears to be plastic. Would like to avoid alot of heat if possible. Gwilly, do you mean for me to seat the main shaft in the bearing and then work the main shaft in the sleeve shaft with the main shaft in the bearing? The bearing has already been installed on the end cover, so it would go on as a unit. It took quite a bit of heat on the cover and freezing the bearing to get it in the end cover - and even then it didn't go without a fight.

More thought, are you sure the kickstart pawl is engaging in the first gear pinion..

Usually have to use a long thin screwdriver to locate as you push inner case in..
Also dont forget to locate gear accuator with bell crank at same time....

Sorry missed your question as wife wanted dustbin put out while i was typing....

I dont like the sound of that bearing, somethings not right, remember did you struggle like hell to get the inner case off in the first place... i bet not. bearing should be in case and be a snug fit over the shaft as you locate other bits... Think i would remove bearing and check fit to shaft.. check printed info on bearing, make sure its right one.....

going to put the main shaft in the freezer and gently heat the bearing and see if I can get the main shaft seated, and then rework the main shaft in the sleeve shaft as I put the cover on. Got an hour or two of freezer time. Will let you know how it goes.
