I have a 2004 4 speed classic, amal mk 1 30mm carb, open pipe. I thrashed it today over to Loch Fyne, was videoed by Triumph riders envious of the bike, thrashed it along Loch Lomond averaging 65mph, thrashed it over to the Trossachs. 100 miles. One tiny drop of oil from non sealed gearbox bearing as ep90 weeped. You have too much engine oil I suspect. Drain it a touch. Then thrash it to run the thing hot, and enjoy working the gearbox, these things are meant to be worked hard not pussyfooted!

Hi Sofia, I've NEVER "pussyfooted" my "thing"
I keep coming back to the point I made earlier, that I've never added any oil since the last change, so why has the problem only manifested itself now??

Hi Tim. The same thing has happened to me, masses of oil all over the rear wheel, and not due to overfilling with oil this time. My bike (Electra X) has two breather pipes, and one of them was completely gunged up and blocked, somehow forcing a lot of oil out of the breather pipe which was still open. Check to see how many breather pipes you have on your particular setup, take them all off and see if any are blocked.

Hi Tim, just joking - it is my first Enfield and I am impressed - goes like stink (ish). Robin's comments about blocked breathers make a lot of sense. People often overfill engine oil, but clearly that is not the issue in your case.

skip is your bike the electra x ?i,ve tried a few breather mods on mine ,mine is a 2006 model with origional breather stub on the lefthand crankcase near the bottom i opened this up fitted a pipewith a duck bill also fitted a duck bill to the oil tank breather ,the crankcase breather made the oil tank breather unemployed oiling my chain rear wheel etc now it wasn,t a lot of oil but it looked it so i tried another idea which didnt work so i dug out the catch can,resealed the crankcase breatherran all pipes as standard except the one at the top of the can which would have gone to the air box origionally i blocked that off ,there is a small overflow pipe in my catch can which i just ran open it would appear water vapour exits there ,since i did this i have had no probs so we will see ,watsonian did a breather mod kit for the electra but it was hideous i mad a early prototype silencer for thwe diesel from the catch can happydays paul.

Hi Sofiaspin. No offence taken!! I'm sure you'll enjoy many years of enjoyable, and at times perplexing, riding on an Enfield!! Despite their many nuances, these bikes really get under your skin!

Check the oil level a few minutes after a run and not after a long rest. All the oil will then have been pumped back into the tank and won't have had a chance to seep into the sump which will give a false low measure on the dip stick, tempting unnecessary top ups/over filling. With the stick resting on the threads the level should be 10mm below max at the most.
