Hello JOHN R---- you slipped under the radar there..As an Ex-RN Marine Engineer (1960,s - 70's) I didn't encounter an exhaust re-cycling system on a submarine as such, but that's not to say it hasn't been developed since then...I can't see any advantage to using diesels underwater as the noise factor alone would render it non-viable, let alone the extra space required for the associated equipment etc...However the search for a fuel that generates oxygen during the combustion process is not new... SO, you can power a sub OR bleach your hair !!!-----------------

Stringers best mate- "never be any retrospective emissions legislation" Not so I'm afraid as I found to my cost. At the beginning of 2012 the London Emission Zone was introduced covering most of the area within the M25 banning the use diesel engined vehicles built before 2001.This applied to small vans,pick-ups,motor caravans etc. as well as larger lorries but not cars or motorcycles. I had a small van adapted to carry a wheelchair which was taxed,MOT'd and insured which overnight became illegal to use where I live or face a fine of £100 a day. There was no compensation or exemption from the new law so my vehicle was virtually scrap and had to be expensively replaced. Hundreds of small businesses and private owners were affected by this retrospective legislation.

Alan, very little on the web about closed cycle diesel engines, they don't seem to have caught on, but they are covered in this article; search.live.com/results.aspx?q=htm&src={referrer:source?}
To bring it back to REs, I've always fancied building a Stirling powered bike.

RichardR, no, there is no injection of petrol into the exhaust, that would be a bit self defeating in a system which is supposed to reduce emissions. What it does do is allow clean air into the exhaust header when the throttle is closed. This dilutes the exhaust somewhat. It doesn't reduce the amount of the emissions though.

Hubb - you're absolutely spot on, mate. I'd completely missed out on that as I'm a carrot cruncher, but it's true none the less. Remember reading some stuff about it from the motorcaravan crowd. Seemed if you owned an old 'un & lived within the 'zone you were fecked.

I meant general MoT stuff, not the paranoid big city cats.
