We have a 1960 500 twin basket case that is being restored. I can never understand why people dismantle things and then can't be bothered putting them back together, but this one is a doozie every nut and bolt, every thing that can be disassembled has been and it has gone through a couple of owners in this condition, and for at least the last 10 years as that is how long the previous owner has had it in that condition

Because it is more fun dismantling things than er, mantling. Look at any 5-year-olds toys; I suppose some men never grow up.

Why?

Hmm, overconfidence? Loss of enthusiasm? Or other more urgent things happening?

I'm somewhat guilty of this, I've had the project bike apart for some time for various jobs (get one done, you find something else needs doing), but then as my wife has major health problems at the moment project bike reassembly & fettling really has to drop down the list (exception is made for keeping the Electra fettled as it's my commuter bike).

Life sometimes just gets in the way, and if these bikes were needed for actual transport rather than hobbies, they'd be fixed soon enough!

Regards,

Adrian

I have a Berini Cyclemotor in such a state at the moment but I am determined to eventually put it together again. My mate who has the 1935 Panther 100 bought it in several different buckets and pieced it together over ten years. The amazing thing was the way missing bits, and there were a few, turned up. There seemed to be an almost magnetic effect where slowly rare and extremely difficult to fabricate parts would turn up at swap meets or via enthusiast networks.

My other pet hate is why previous owners of Enfield twins tighten the sump plug up with a cold chisel

Norm, that's because the Americans don't have an AF spanner that covers that Whitworth size! All the others seem to be ok. REgards, Mark

Pulling stuff apart costs nothing, rebuilding it is when you need to invest cash into the project...
