So far all seems tickety boo! No signs of leakage after five or six miles and while the timbre of the engine note has changed a little it certainly isn't nasty sounding. Moreover the minimal muffling provided by my home made burgess copy muffler means it isn't audible anyway.

Hello SIMON----------- my accept my compliments as as well... that's a neat looking machine !! I'm impressed with the magneto ignition--- is that your own handywork, and if so how did you make and fit the mounting plate etc. ??? ---Also, Could you tell us a bit more about the Burgess "look-alike" silencer---sorry, muffler ?? (Whereabouts are you ?)---Glad to hear there's no leaks on that cylinder---just goes to show how heavy those iron barrels are, eh??

Thanks Chaps, Its an Indian motor circa 1992 (it has 692 stamped on either side of the crankcase which my brother says is a date stamp) I put the SR1 on it which went straight on without a problem the only difficulty being the procuring of the auto advance unit which is vital for an SR1. Fortunately our hosts were able to send me an overhauled unit. The frame and motor came as a spare parts bike with a late 70's Indian 350 that my brother bought a decade or more ago. It had had a front end smash so the forks and front wheel were kaput. I spotted a set of 50's forks on our version of Ebay (trademe.co.nz) and had the thought that I could cobble a special together. I had an amazingly appropriate collection of spares from the 51 Bullet including the seat and a set of wheels so that was that. The Silencer (you are obviously right there Alan) is a home made effort but not terribly cheap as the chrome plating puts the cost up. The advantage is that you can make them to fit anything. A friend with both a 1935 and a 1950 Panther 600 Sloper needed four of them so we found a company that manufactured exhausts and bought lengths of pipe which they for a very nominal fee would swage the ends of. This gave them the appropriate rounded ended sausage profile although there was still a fair bit of gas and panel hammering required to bring the holes at either end down to the appropriate diameter. It is a totally hollow unit with the baffling (also nominal) being provided AMC style with a blanked off section of drilled pipe interference fitted into the covered end of the header pipe. Might have been a tad premature with the no leaks brag too Alan there does seem to be a small amount of oil getting out but it looks as though its coming from the cylinder head. Will investigate further.

---------- if you want to continue with the '50's appearance, have a look at my recent}--- "shocking" posting, giving a very cheap-to-do lower shroud conversion... Could you post some close-up phots of that Lucas SR1 Magneto conversion please ?? I'm gradually changing my No2 bullet to a 1950's Army Despatch Riders look and that would fit the bill just fine !!

Hello again SIMON---- first, please note the time this was posted ie early morning and I'm half awake because second}--- I've just seen your photostream and recognised the bike !!!!!! and thus remembered who you are !! SO, you haven't sold it then, the carb repairs worked OK, the cover mod using the decompressor part is still holding and the clutch centre hasn't dropped off ?? (I'm up to speed now)---------------This being over 60 is hard to live with---- I'm off now--GOOD-NIGHT !!!!

Yes Alan tis I! Although this bullet isn't for sale its the other Redditch one that is on the market. There is no modification required for the SR1 the mounting is identical to the distributor so it simply screws on with eh same three screws. The bulge in the cover was put there with an SR1 in mind so it goes on like a goodun as though they hadn't only fitted them for two years.
