Steve,
The plates under the motor have worn the holes out, you need to either repair or replace the plates. I usually weld washers on them but this may not be an option for you

is it a big job to replace the plates ie do you need to take the engine and gear box out

Steve,
Never tried with the motor in but I see no reason as to why it can't be done, Bit fiddley because it involves removing the centre stand and sidestand which means you have to suport the bike somehow and then getting the footpeg shaft back through is a pain as is the stud under the motor but is doable

No, its a dirty job as the area gets pretty covered in filth so I recommend a water blast before you start but you can remove the whole stand and bottom engine pate unit without removing the motor from the frame. You might need to jack the motor and gearbox up a bit to get everything to align when you put it back though.

I recently had the engine out to fit new main bearings and though I had enough sense to do loads of other things at the same time, for some reason I never thought to do the engine plates.
The centrestand on my bike is a joke; you can practically ride with off with it down, let alone the sidestand!
