I just got a ball park figure to rebuild an SR2 mag $700 to $800 depending on what is needed. Looks like another twin out here will be getting a Pazon ignition unit fitted

Agree Norm, Pazon has to be the way forward. $800 is too much for authenticity, less you have more money than sense... more reliable as well i shouldnt wonder.... Keep up the good work and your leg... gwilly

Hi Norm that sounds outrageous. The SR2 is a very simple unit and dead easy to work on the only part that may need specialist attention is the coil and that comes out so easily it is unreal all other work can be done by yourself.

to test the coil you just need an ohm meter the primary should measure about 2ohm and the secondary should measure about 5k ohm if they both measure OK then the coil is fine.

I had my coil rewound in the UK four years ago and the cost was £75.00.

Hi Gwilly, the Pazons are a good bit of kit, set and forget and out here we ride these things as much as possible, reliability overides authenticity. Leg is certainly starting to improve, getting over the medication they pump through you is proving a bit more of a problem
Hi Dennis, SR2 is a beautifull mag, so simple, but out here for anything that isn't made in China we get totally screwed on There is only a few places that can do maggie repairs

Seems like a big cost for an SR2. They are a phenomenally reliable unit and originality is bankable value in my experience. Still I suppose you've been through all of this.

There is not a lot to go wrong with a Lucas SR2 magneto. The coil is the same as a Lucas SR1 magneto, which was fitted to thousands of stationary engines as well as motorcycles. You should be able to find a second hand coil for not a lot of money if you need one. I have also seen brand new coils for less than £100. There are only two small bearings on the main shaft that are also available new. These magnetos have a separate condenser like points ignition so the usual expensive fault found on earlier Mags can sorted for less than £10. Have a search on websites that cater for stationary engines.
I am not a great fan of points ignition and when I bought a trials Bullet fitted with an SR1 mag I was going to replace it with electronic ignition as soon as possible. It has however proved entirely reliable for a number of years with little maintenance. The only time it has let me down was when I tried to run it under water, but that is another story.
