Remove all the existing welded bits, the downtube will then fall off, turn up a sleve of solid bar to fit inside the cast fitting one end and the tube the other (possibly the same if the tube is still inside the cast fitting) at least 50 mm into each end, prepare the butt joins properly leave a 1/8th inch gap between the butt join and then weld it together so that the weld is onto the bar and the tube making it one solid unit

Hello CANUCK,---- Oh my gawd !!---Well,first}-- Nice one,son and WELL DONE !! for staying with it and not falling into the "It'll be alright as it is---" trap..second} Agree entirely with NORM re:-- the repairs needed.. If you can employ a coded, professional welder then so much the better. Your peace of mind will far outweigh any costs... Also, the receipts might prove useful if your Insurance people need to know......Send us pictures of the finished job as well, eh.????
