The fork tubes of my '59 Super Meteor refuse to budge despite a good fit hexagon bar. Before I strip the casquette and set to with a hot flame on the housing can anyone reduce the risk of me destroying something by telling me how it should be done? Thanks. GWR

OH HONOURED SIR !!!--------- your avatar is to be highly commended !!---------- I'm a life-long worshipper of the Copper Cap and all-things Great Western!!----OK, I've calmed down now (just taken 2 LMS pills, that did the trick )....Now thne, are you turning the hex bar CLOCKWISE when viewed from on top ?? It's a R/H thread and you want the legs to go DOWNWARDS !!--- that's after doing what GRUNDA has said, of course !! And YES, they can be VERY tight......I've had to use a 2ft bar and a 3/4" drive socket with a short hex attached before mine would move...Equally my second bike was no effort at all !!! You shouldn't need to apply the "Black & Red" Hammer really.

Thanks Alan R and grunda 12. I seem to be doing the right things, but will check again. Will try a longer extension on the hexagon first and someone to hold the forks. My uncle was an LMS driver and gave me the W to turn me into GWR. How generous can an uncle be?

Hello GWR, if you REALLY want to upset your Uncle you might suggest that, after William Stanier became the CME of the LMS, Derby Works was UPGRADED to become nothing more than a pale version of Swindon !! That should do it.... Can you soak the threaded parts with WD40 etc ?? ( that's to keep within the thread)..........

Try running some heat up inside the Casquette, easy to access with headlamp out. A hot air gun may be enough to do it but you'll need to work at it for a while, the alloy heatsinks very well! When you replace the tubes, use some Copperslip or similar... REgards, Mark
