That's amazingly helpful Alan R, thanks for uploading the pic. The cable was from Hitchcocks, Part No. 143322. I emailed today to check it and they confirmed it was the part recommended for the year. I believe it was the correct length before as I never had an issue. It sort of feels like the sleeve is too long if that makes any sense, like not enough of the cable is protruding when the sleeve is seated correctly at both ends. They measure up the same as far as I can see though. At least it's a good reason not to be tempted to ride in the snow if nothing else.

Hello again............ our hosts also do a longer cable and is Quote}-- "for high handlebars".. This is English made = Part No. }---- 143322L priced at £10 in the catalogue... I don't know the tech. details ie length but it might help ??? Give 'em a phone call and ask for them to measure it for you...Yes, if the outer cover was longer than it should be, then that certainly would give a "fore-shortened" effect on the inner...

Just thought I'd wrap this up for prosterity. After routing the cable very carefully step by step I finally established that I couldn't run it through the yoke and have the slide hit the bottom of the carb with the much desired thump, it was a couple of mm off perhaps due to the cable sheath being a little long. Eventually I drilled into the split ferrel at the handbar end just a couple of mm so the cable end could sit further in and it worked a treat, the new throttle cable works with life affirming efficiency. It's possibly the case that the replacement offered by our hosts covers such an ambiguous range that some adjustment is needed, I was just unlucky mine was in the direction not aided by the adjustment screws. Many thanks for the advice and found over a week without the rattlebone quite a tough challenge.
