Check out my damaged crank on Youtube? I'd value a second opinion here if possible, as I'm on my own down this way. A shame I cant really use it now, as it goes and sounds a treat too? Recently, I found a supplier in the Midlands, flogging off all his RE stock, and the Driveshaft bit I need is quoted at £22.50, an Indian part. Not expensive, just the aggro of a complete strip and rebuild. And IF I do go down this road, where will it end! If I do what most do, and replace all the crap Indian parts with far superior aftermarket bits, I'm sure I'll end up spending a small fortune. The £1100 cost for a Diesel conversion doesen't seem so sad now? Finally, did I do well getting 11,111km's out of my Bullet? I find it hard to believe people get 20,000+ out of these engines! BT

hi B.T the diesel conversion is good vfm and will pay for itself in unstressed touring i could have repaired the HELLECTRA in that mannner although 1 diesel in the stable is enough for me!atb paul.

Bullet Train - To answer your question, no you did not do well only getting 11k out of your engine. I would be gutted with that (17k and no problems yet but mine is a 350). I should hope someone will be along soon to give you a sensible estimate of rebuilding an engine with our hosts quality parts to make a reliable solid bike - not to be confused with trying to make it into a fast bike which is expensive. As for making it into a slow and ugly one with a chinese diesel well that's another question altogether!

John J, This is my experience with my first Bullet. I'm only slating my engine. 11,000km's and a knackered crank/charging system is not impressive in my book. As the very existence of our host's have proved time and again, there IS an alternative to sub-standard Indian workmanship. I'ts just a case of how deep one's pockets are........! I'll keep you posted. BT.

You're assuming it's the crank that's at fault, but I'd think the main bearings are more likely to be the culprit. If it is actually the crank that's knackered, don't attempt to dismantle and re-assemble it yourself: it's a job for an expert with the correct equipment and experience. Alpha Bearings in Halesowen are good, but they can be rather slow sometimes. Or just buy a complete crank assembly from Hitchcock's!

A visual check such as shown is no way accurate.........Removal of rotor and checking with dial gauge for any run out plus of course feeling for up/down movement of drive shaft.....As mentioned above the drive side bearing could be at fault
