Hi guys--------- just a line of thought to chew on over the "Festive Season" }------ why are MoT charges (for motorcycles at least) not pro-rata to match engine sizes as per road tax ??--------- As most of you will have found by experience it's almost a post-code lottery if you have a moped/pedal & pop machine to find a tester who will charge less for these powered push bikes--- the very type that commuters/city dwellers etc should be actively encouraged to use in place(albeit Summer or short journeys)of the 3-litre "Chelsea Tractors" As they say in exam papers }----- Discuss.

Hi Alan R,it`s all about test time limits for two/three/four wheel vehicles,i`ve seen car tests for £35 but it takes over a hour to do it,so where is your £60 a hour labour charge there? Never seen bike tests for £20 pro-rata.

Hi guys---- PAUL MH, that "Blanket charge" for a "motorbike" illustrates my point entirely... The owners of a Honda monkey bike or a Gold Wing pay the same for an MoT but NOT for VEL.(Road Tax)---- something not right there, is there ??

Paul, MOT charges are clearly shown on a VOSA poster in each MOT station. These are actually the maximum charges that can be charged by the test station. The test station is permitted to charge whatever they like as long as it does not exceed the maximum. My local bike tester charges me £18.50 for bikes. Why? Because he feels like it and he knows I take them all there, and they are well prepared. Indeed as many adopt this approach to bikes, in my experience, it is actually a case of "non-rip off Britain" for a change. The time allocated is a function of the time set on the DVLA/VOSA computer. I don't do MOT tests on any of our cars. Simply sell them before they are 3 years old.

£18.50 at my local kawayamahonduki dealer but complimentary bacon sarnies and teas are supplied while you wait. Also they're quite happy for me, and presumably others too, to fix any minor faults rather than issue failures or advisories. Proper job I say.

This isn't a comment regarding the value or otherwise of the charges levied for MOTs, but I understand from my local tester that the computer link up to VOSA will only allow one test to be conducted every 30 minutes. Hence there are limits to how much profit can be made.
