hi Matt firstly you say clean your 20ltr can you have then say you will store petrol in it and then a can of diesel. I dont think I would worry about cleaning the first can but I would most definitely inform your local Fire brigade of what your storing.......Take care alan from Bournville

I don't think storage of fuel in reasonable quantities in a metal jerry can designed for the purpose is any more of a hazard than having fuel in the tank of your car or bike that's parked in a garage.

Hi MATT-------- Yes, get another jerry can and have a red one for petrol and a green one for diesel.... They're not that dear and are a very secure way of storing flammable fuels.............. Technically speaking they are both distillates of crude oil, petrol being extracted at a higher level than diesel from the "Cat Cracker" at the refinery. ..Have a look at this }----- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluid_catalytic_cracking --------------------- If you take into account the exploration, drilling/recovery, global transportation, refining, local transportation, marketing and then finally]--- SELLING, you can see why oil-based fuels are so expensive.

Ah yes ----------- that's right. Don't know where that one came from ?? Some deep re-cess(pit) from my dim & distant past. Mind you, with leaded petrol now being as rare as pundits in the past predicted it would become, then just red and black will suffice ??

Matt if as you say the can is contaminated by diesel but is actually empty then fill it with petrol and do not worry about it. The contamination level will have absolutely no effect whatsoever. I have several times accidentally put 4 or 5 gallons of perol in a diesel car by accident and then simply filled with unleaded. Result no noticeable affect on the engine. Similarly such a very low level of diesel in the can will do no harm at all.

Come to think of it, I put a few gallons of petrol in a diesel once. I filled it up to the brim with diesel and had no problems. Mind you, I once calmost completely filled a diesel with petrol once and that was a different story!!!

Mike I too but only the once put a few litres petrol in a diesel car before I realised my mistook............I hope you did as I did and brimmed it with diesel and not unleaded as you say you did!!!!!!!!.........Runnibg petrol through a diesel engine will rapidly shag an expensive injector pump if nothing worse
