Yesterday was spent taking off the forks and casquette, forgot what a faf it is. Looking down the headstock tube with a torch and reading glasses, there's virtually no rust only a very fine dusting that wipes off with fingers which I was well pleased with. The problem is the top of the downtube is a seperate chamber and there's no way of looking inside. The only thing I can do is tip the whole bike upside down and pour some kind of of rust treatment or hot waxoil up the bottom of the downtube. The headstock/downtube join must be some kind of moisture trap that Indian bullets don't suffer from, although I still dont get how such a tight join full of brass and not exposed to the elements can have rust in it. Thanks for the contributions, next weekend its getting tipped upsidedown!

Chris, you can get a Waxoyl spray tube with a spreader nozzle on the end which is intended for spraying the inside of chassis members. Might help.

Hi Paul, the mystery rust is a bit of an enigma. On Saturday we (Ian) are squirting warm waxoyl up the downtube or turning the bike upside down and pumping warm waxoyl down, see how it goes. I dont have light in the garage so any work has to wait until the weekends. I think I've lost a few steering bearings so need to order a new set. I think I'll be in the car next week, thanks for asking. How's the new bike?

Paul, what have you done with the rear guard carrier, that ugly frame that the original seat bolted to?. If you put Bullet rear shocks on it that will also lower it another 1". Slacken the swing arm bushes if you do this so they can sit in the relaxed position and then retighten
