Hi Rob,I had a similar problem with metal bits in oil filter ended up as a major strip down of the engine,turned out to be the crankshaft main bearings turning in the crankcase and shaving bits of metal off as it turned.What type of metal is in your filter ,steel,white metal,aluminium?
this may give an indication of where the metal is coming from,when i had the similar problem this site proved invaluable with input from much wiser and experienced enfield owners than me I am sure there will be more advice from this site forthcoming.

Front plug is scavenge pump check inside the rockers because they will be filling with metal and will eventuall block and strip the pump spindle

Well chaps I have said it before on a number of occasions, and will no doubt do so again in the future. DO NOT start the engine. Strip it and find the source of the problem. Replace ALL offending parts, bearings etc etc and make sure that you religiously clean out all oil ways, pipes and bearing surfaces. Whilst stripped treat your engine to new bearings and bushes while you have the opportunity. The filter has caught some metal, but do not think that none has passed through the filter. Filters in motorcycle lubrication systems are basic at best and inefficient at worst. Oil plus metal dust of particles equals grinding paste on every surface of your engine. Oil and metal particles do not make for a happy engine. If anybody tells you differently then he knows nothing about engines, lubriaction and good engineering principles. Roberto I hope you get it fixed quickly. HTH.

First it has a rattle now it has metal in the oil, sorry Bob, you have a major rebuild on your hands, as Mike indicates there are no short cuts the engine needs a complete strip all oil-ways etc cleaned thoroughly and every worn or suspect part replaced.

Hi all just to agree with madmike who gave me the same advice when I had metal in the oil filter ,a strip down is the only way to find and cure the problem oil with metal bits are not a good omen,I followed the advice and after much work(and lots of cash) now have a healthy engine .

Thanks to every one for the help,But at this time,ijust feel sick of it,one thing after another,i have ejoyed the enfield while i have had it but enough is enough i am 81 now and i have wasted enough precious time on it, ihave a125 suzuki needs a bit of work but compared to the enfield hopefully once its done i can ride it more and have to mend it less, as far as im concered buying an indan en field is a big waste of money,thanks again to you all.Bob

Bob, old Brit bikes can be a money pit, they can be made reliable but it does cost money, sometimes buckets, and the problem with the Indian Enfields is there is far too much in the way of cheap parts floating about that are just that, cheap parts and fitting them is just a waste of time. Ditch the Enfield and the Suzie should do you fine

Bob, Do have empathy with
your treacherous Enfield
imploding. The other good
men have given an accurate
prognosis what to expect if
you spend a nickel more on
this junk. Norm was spot on;
enjoy your Suzuki whilst you
can, and ride into your sunset
smiling. Good Luck! Gordon

It's a sad fact that most modern Enfields are a bag of crap. I think that they provide a cheap way for some of us to re-live a bit of our youth (me included), but compared to Hondas and Suzukis etc they are not even in the same league. At around £5 1/2 grand for a new one I can't believe anyone would buy one when for a few weeks more pocket money you could buy a brand new Hinkley Bonneville. Enjoy your Suzuki Rob and I'm sure I speak for everyone on here when I wish you many more years of happy, trouble-free motorcycling. You are an inspiration to us all. Tony.
