Hi All,

New to the message board. I used to have an old 350 classic which I loved, but have just bought an almost new electra efi. I am very pleased with it, such a great ride!

My question is this... once the red petrol warning light begins to flash how much is left in tthe tank... how many miles can you do before filling up?

I am planning to take it down to spain and back through france, so need an idea about safe distances to service stations etc.

Hi,Beachhutman,I fill my Efi up when the light start flashing.It takes 10-66 litres(2-39 gallons) so that leaves me about 1-1 gallons left which is about 100miles left in the tank. Best Wishes Johnh

It's fairly easy to find this out: Bring a small petrol can, 3 - 4 litres will do. Go for a ride. When the red warning light comes on, note the mileage. Then run the tank dry and see how far you got. The extra petrol will bring you home or to the nearest petrol station. This is the safest way, I think. Regards, Anders F. R.

Before trying this does anybody know if any problems may occur to the fuel pump and injection by running it dry, probably not but hate to bring on another problem

Hi guys -------- good question NORM... Older, Diesel systems needed bleeding once air had entered, but modern ones are self-bleeding. This might apply to RE petrol as well. Best just check with your RE people first Beachunt, before carrying out Anders very practical suggestion ??

I think I'm right in saying that you should avoid running out of petrol if your exhaust system has a catalyst fitted (as is the case with an EFI Electra).

Mine runs out in 33-37 miles. Don't bother with how I know.

I don't know about the efi, but I once had to switch over to reserve, about 500 yards from home. I decided to see how much fuel was still in the tank. With the bike on the centre stand on level ground and the tap in the reserve position, I took off the fuel-pipe and let it drain the tank into a dry plastic container then just measured how much I'd got. Couldn't you do something like that with the efi one day when the fuel is low? Maybe you could drain some fuel out until the light comes on, then drain and measure the remainder before putting it all back in. (I got about 3.75 pints by the weay - almost half a gallon)............... Tom.
