Best way to tension the rear chain I have found is to sit on the bike and if going touring with all your gear on the bike. My 06 Electra chain when correctly tensioned hangs slack when on the centre stand. I read somewhere the Indian chain market sales took off when the Electra came on the market. This was caused by the new rear shockers that were longer and put the rear spindle to swinging arm way out of alignment causing the chain to tighten far too much off the stand. Set it by the book on the centre stand and it will be far too tight when ridden. Best to have a friend to help you to do this. I am not sure if this happens on other models but my none Indian chain has only been ajusted slightly over the 4,000 miles since fitted. Hope this helps Bertie

On the Electra X I was told by the dealer only to adjust the chain when the bottom run can be lifted behind the pillion footrest bracket and then only by 1 notch on the snail cam. This does seem pretty slack when on the centre stand but feels about right when off it and sitting on it.
