Just to give PeteF a little back up here. My local Chrome plater always insists that the only way to clean Chrome without damage it a clean cloth and wax polish and never to use any type of abrasive cleaning agent. Now running for cover.

Got to differ G, Wire wool and Solvol will produce tiny scratches which will shorten the life of the plating. Decorative chrome plating is usually than 0.00025 mm thick. 'Course, if that's what it needs to get the crap off it..............!

just an idea use autosol applied by a thick piece of cardboard ,it does shift stubborn marks, don't rub to hard and polish with a soft cloth,it worked for me after some old time biker told me to try it.

Spray WD40 or similar penetrating / water dispersant let soak for a few hours, heating gently if necessary and rubbing with a rough cloth like an old towel will remove it without scratching. Bin dere, dun dat.

thank you guys, i knew i would get some help though i am now not so sure of the best approach. I must say i have never used 0000 wire woold but it was against my instinct to use anything too abrasive so i might try soft wood to remove the worst of it when hot then autosol and a cloth later. If that doesn't work the wire wool will be my back up. I will post a result at somepoint but with my track record of sorting out minor cosmetic issues it may be in the spring tart up after a hard winter.
