---------sorry, forgot to add}----If you are looking for REAL accuracy then use a timing disc on the crankshaft to set TDC etc.... At least you can get a visualisation as to what is happening-----and you can adjust the primary at the same time-----and put in that ATF you've been promising yourself for months now !!--- 3 jobs done for the price of 1.

On a Bullet, even cheaper then a drinking straw is to remove plug and decompresser and shine a torch into one of the holes. Looking into the other hole its easy to see the piston and ease it to exactly TDC. With care, accuracy is surprisingly easy.

Midge,
Drink straw is much cheaper than removing the decompressor considering you should replace the washers on the decompressor otherwise they leak too much

Hi all Mr'H' does a dial gauge with three adapters to suit many engines

Be careful with the universal dial gauges, I bought several all of which were no use. Head too large to fit between rocker covers, plunger not long enough and travel would not cover the range. Make sure you buy one suitable for the Bullet, ie the one Hitchcocks list with the 3 different plungers.

With the back wheel of the ground push on the kicker to find compression stroke (thumb over plug hole) put bike into 4th drink straw down the plug hole, bump the rear wheel in a forward direction and and watch the drink straw rise till it peaks out, rock back and forth till your happy you have TDC, then with a rearward bump of the wheel you can get the straw to just begin to go down max of 1mm. This is close enough for any standard Enfield. You can then adjust to suit from here

Thanks Yorkie, I had not seen that listed before, must be new :-)

Good to know I can get one from Mr H. that I know will be just right. Now to convert that 5/8" vertical measurement to the angled measurement, just got to find out what angle the sparking plug is at, then I'll see if I can remember how to calculate it. (sines?)

Norm, you shouldn't move backwards to set the piston BTDC as the backlash in the timing gears makes for inaccuracies.

Peter, trying to keep it simple, remember it is an Enfield and this is only the starting point, gets you going in ten minutes
