this message is mainly aimed at our hosts....would it be possible for our hosts to sell a speedometer that gives a reliable reading, most of the indian speedo,s are wildly inacurate,my repro smiths clock is absolutely appalling waving at me,has anybody got a resonable option for this ,having recently been done for speeding i could do with a clock that reads correctly any info or product recomendations would be gratefully accepted ,atb paul,

Just fitted a cycle computer as a backup as my speedo was reading all over. Cycle computer is very small neat and also records max speed, average speed, and has a clock.

I Find The Enfield Speedo Very Predictable in its "Random approach to speed" Having Owend 5 RE's I have Never Had One "Over read" Usually 20 KMP Under at 60.... But Once Checked against a Fellow Motorcycle or Other Medium I usually Mark 30 & 60 on the Clock face & Many thousand of miles Later it (And They) Still.held true....
I use To use A Stick on Face For The speedo to show Correct, but Found That whilst Bellow 30 was True 30 's difference was Not the same as 60??.
So If they made a Dailable face we Could calibrate our Own Machines Cheaply.... Or Go the Proposed route Of a Highly tuned, Calibrated Clock.....
Cheers all.................Craig

As strange as it may seem, I don't think the speedo is the problem. The speedo on my Lightning is as steady as a rock. In fact, the tacho has more wobbles than the speedo has. In my opinion, the problem is the routing of the speedo cable. On the Lightning, there's no kinks, It's a direct route from the speedo gearbox on the front wheel to the speedo head itself. Since the standard Bullit has a casquette, the cable has to go around corners, etc. This causes 'snatch' in the inner cable (My old Bantam was a sod for it). You can't completely cure it (Unless you buy a Lightning or a Thunderbird), but you can lessen the effect. Use plenty of grease and re-route the cable to eliminate kinks.

These Indian speedo's need some lube inside. They are great for a few thousand miles but when they get dry they weave like mad. Mines rock solid after stripping it and greasing the cogs but they are not designed to be opened so once the seals gone they let rain in. A friend drilled a couple of small holes in the side of his, just big enough to get the WD40 long thin nozzle in.

For my old 2007 Bullet, I bought the Smiths Chrono look a like. It was better than the original, needle did not swing wildly and from memory at 50km/h indicated, it was about 5km/h fast. I had a hard wired cycle speedo as reference. After aquiring a new EFI and fitting another cycle speedo, I found the new speedo considerable better, over reading by only about 2km/h at 50 and about 5 at 80. I see no reason why the speedo cable should not be able to carry a magnet(s) to generate pulses that could be converted to a digital readout with considerable accuracy or even drive an electronic analogue. Its all a question of demand and price. My new Piaggio X10 has such a system, all electronic, possible picks up speed signal from the ABS ring. I have yet to calibrate it against my GPS. chris, i tried the wd 40 approach lets say it had little effect ,i thought i,d try the pushbike speedo route but didn,t like the set up ,i cannot believe that speedo,s can still be so wildly innacurate can you imagine going to the magistrates court and saying my speedo needle never reads accurate theyed say crush the vehicle maybe thats how you get a accurate clock ? i just thought that mr h all things great to enfields would have come up with a accurate speedo (i know he hasn,t ) as young hammond has sent at least 3 speedo,s back in the last year

I was lucky - I bought a 'Smiths' one that was reasonably accurate measured against my satnav. The downside is that it's just an ordinary Indian one with a thin vinyl-looking 'Smiths' face stuck over the original face, which shows through when the lights are on.

I recently replaced the original plastic speedo drive with our hosts' metal one. It's now more or less as accurate as any speedo, consistently over-reads by about 10%.
