Nobody seemed to know when the cut off point for no MOT was so i contacted Swansea and my local MOT centre and they both said up to but not including 1960 so anything up to 1959. I have now been told that the wording say's when the bike was made and not when it was first registered so i am wondering if i come into the no Mot bracket with my R E Crusader Sport 1960,. so is there anyone who has the frame numbers and when they were made, my frame/chassis number is 17066 and i would be glad to find out if it was actually made 1959. Also a friend has raised the question of optional MOTs that we now have for our earlier machines and if we choose not to have them MOTd will the Insurance companies be looking to raise our premiums using the excuse that our machines will not be as safe as in previous years. It's nice to know i dont have to have an MOT for my other machines but it does raise a few doubts about how we stand.

If your a member of the REOC Your best bet is to get a dating certificate from the Royal Enfield Owners Club as you can use this as proof.

if i was you i,d still get a mot for a bike 1960 or earlier caution needs to be used with this no mot job ,i,ll be interested to see what happens when the first accident happens on a mot exempt vehicle hornets nest i bet get ready is what i say !!

I suspect insurance companies will start demanding an MOT whatever the government says.

OR all insurance premiums on pre-1959 Classic bikes will rise to cover the increased risk potential.....bring back the MOT I say

If I were in the position of having a car or bike of that age, I am pretty sure that I would get an MOT voluntarily.
=1=It would be an extra safety check for me. =2=Nobody would be able to say you hadn't been trying to keep it up to scratch if there were an incident of some sort. =3=It might look better for eventual resale purposes to have a good "record";worth more? =4=It would appear to anyone being negative that we have proof on paper that it's ok. And things on paper do seem to count for a lot; grrrr. =5=I usually get given a nice brew when I take the car for an MOT. Just my thoughts....

Why all the panic over no MOT, the Isle of Man manage without MOTs and the world hasn't come to an end.
To be honest I don't think it is a good idea and I don't trust the government not to restrict the use of pre 1960 vehicles, but why should Insurance companies insist on MOTs when they don't for bikes in the Isle of Man or U.K bikes less than 3 years old?

Nobody's going to panic John it's just that there are too many grey areas so questions need answering. As for going for an MOT voluntarily well thats ok if your not too sure of your mechanical skills but i know that when i take my bikes for MOTs they are all in A1 condition so why should i have to pay £26 or more for some tester to check my spokes, my lights, the horn and stoplight and then the brakes all in about five minutes and then spend the rest of the test time talking to me about bikes while we drink a coffee. I also have an old car so i would have a voluntary MOT with that as i have'nt got a lift and when the car is up on one of them you can spot things you would'nt normally notice such as rust etc and it does take the tester all of the MOT time checking things.
