Can anyone tell me if there are any baffles at all in our host's Gold Star silencer (apart from the removable piece in the tailpipe)? The reverse-cone megaphone for example, has a large-bore perforated tube running through it (about the same bore as the exhaust pipe, around which can wrapped sound-absorbing wool), while the "free-flow" silencer has some baffling, but retains an un-interupted hole through the centre but of small-ish diameter. So is the Goldie totally un-restricted (as in "completely empty") or what? - Thanks!

Without the removeable piece, you can see straight through. There is, however, something surrounding the hole.

hi barry ,i had a 350 classic bullet in my shed last week and it sounded awful even at tickover,i think it had the removable baffle in,i can't see the point of it ,it would sound better if it were a straight through pipe,i have seen 1 on an efi that sounded better i assume its a different quality baffle?i run a B.S.A Starfire silencer on my classic 350 a much better sound deeper growl Happy days!

As per John R - you can see straight through the pipe centre - which is basically a non removable perforated tube. I', not sure if there's any further damping material surrounding the tube but the pipe is loud - especially when you open the throttle. The small baffle supplied with the pipe dampens the noise minimally. I'm currently experimenting with a "lolipop" baffle in the pipe - so far it does not seem to make a huge difference except when there's is the occasional backfire the sound of the traditionsl backfire changes in a multiple of smaller and more silent backfires?

I just took mine off last week to paint the brackets and there is nothing what so ever I could see in mine just an empty shell its the standard one already fitted and supplied by Watsonian Squire on the My sportsman from new. It dose not even have the removable baffle in the end or a hole too fit one. Mind you it sounds good a nice deep roar especially when opening the throttle coming up Muswell hill around 02.00 in the morning. I find it sometimes sets off parked car alarms as you past them must be the sound waves. Never had any complaints though or MOT troubles.

Barry I have our hosts excellent Goldy silencer (and header pipe) on my Electra XS. The silencer does have a large bore perforated 'second skin' inside the wide section but no sound absorbing wool.
I found that thus installed the sound level was a touch too high so fitted the small replaceable baffle. This gave a slightly higher pitched tone so I wrapped some absorbant wool around it. This now gives a deep tone which is loud but not offensive. Performance is unaffected by fitting the baffle/wool.

Still think a genuine Velocette Fishtail would give best sound V performance, but cost is high but might look excellent on the Bullet (obviously non-standard if that matters)

Is there a proper way of fitting our hosts baffle? I got one last year but there were no instructions so I fitted it at the inlet of the silencer after drilling a fixing hole for the bolt. It tempered the sound to a better note but is still a bit loud, I wonder if I should have fitted it pipe rather then the silencer. Any thoughts?
