hi all
after getting my 350 redditch engine sorted and running well,thought it time to sort out gearbox out,it selects gear as it should (every now and then anyway )but it has a wine of a moggy minor .it had a rebuild about 2 years ago bushes and bearings.is there anyone out there with any ideas or do they all do that .cheers

Do you mean a whine when running in neutral, or riding the bike? Start the engine and let it run on the centre stand, with the clutch pulled in. Does it whine? If so, I'd check primary chain tension first. If this is ok, I'd look at the timing gears for the source of the noise. Has it always made this noise, or has it just started since some work was done on the engine? If it whines when riding, does it stop with the throttle closed and the clutch pulled in? ...ie. is the whine from the gearbox?............I think it would help if you gave us more info as to the circumstances of the noise.

I thought mine had a whine but it turned out to be the MT80 Pirellis.

its definatly not road noise as it is used for off road only,enduro,s and hillclimbs,
the engine is sweet at the moment and has no wine when in neutral or in gear whith the clutch pulled in stood still not sure if it does the same while one the move while clutch is pulled in . im not really sure how long its been like it as i have only just got the engine running wright after a couple of years , so it was a case of if it went in gear it would do,could it be a bent mainshaft

So, is the whining only heard when the bike is moving? It seems from what you have said that it is not the engine, so it could be the gearbox. A bent mainshaft is possible, but so are lots of things! Have you removed the primary chain and tried turning the gearbox by hand? I would think that a bent mainshaft would be detectable by a tightening-up and loosening-off feeling as the shaft is rotated - maybe even run-out of the clutch as it rotates. It may also be a failing gearbox bearing or bush. All of the above will need the gearbox dismantling to find out the exact problem. Oh, and have you checked rear chain tension?

If it hasn't been used in a long time it could be that one of the ball races has rusted and is howling. I had a car gearbox that wailed like a banshee until I replaced the output bearing.
