Now, a bit more info to help you }--- a) It wasn't raining---b)It WAS sudden, ie. no pre-warning-----c) No mechanical noises as I drifted to a halt, d) The sun was in the West.

'It was running sweetly at 60 with no pre-warning', so that rules out fuel, out of fuel or bad fuel would give symptoms. * 'Two bangs from exhaust', it depends if mechanical bangs or combustion bangs' * 'Cut straight out', that suggests electrical. * I conclude your honour that either the motor suffered sudden terminal piston failure if it was mechanical noise, or a component in the ignition circuit such as points or electronic pick-up if it was a combustion noise.

Nice going so far.Come on others out there, give your diagnostic head a work-out ??? --------------------- It's a standard Classic 500cc, 4-speed----with points, and our hosts forged piston and (de-) Compression plate giving approx 7:1 ratio.
