Just to update all the people who did their best to help, after weeks of cleaning earths, switches and examining wiring, I gave up and just ran a new cable back from the front stop lamp switch direct to the lamp. Ugly but it works.

John R - I sympathise with your plight, I find the rear light/indicator cluster on my Classic 500 to be by far the weakest area electrically. I once had three earth points fail simultaneously (both indicators and tail/stop light). What are the odds of that?? Alan R...why is Patience Imperial and Perseverance Metric...????

And me, with the oposite problem, (read above) dismounted the red/white wire part on the indicator flasher unit and instead mounted a 6" cable directly from battery + to the same contact on the indicator flasher unit.
Now the indicators can flash even when the engine is off, and no bad effects on the brakelight or any other lamp. The only problem is if one - by mistake - start the indicators when the bike is parked and the flashing goes on for hours and drains the battery. But I can live with that. Thanks for advices Les H.
