before anybody says weve had this before ,i,m going to ask again ,i already know what i,m going to do so heres the conundrum,on stripping the electra that could have bankrupted a small eastern european nation the crankcases were gasket sealent only no gasket i presume this was done at the factory as this motor had never been stripped before the sealent was a type of grey rubber ,now i,m from the old school who use paper gaskets with a smear of grease, proper gaskets being available i intend to use them but i wonder why the indians used sealent instead of a gasket?the casing faces are very good so i can,t under stand this ,if no gasket was available i could live with sealed cases as with all jappers i,ve ever worked on ,but i like a gasket ,can anybody shed light on this conundrum?atb paul.

Modern sealant is easier cheaper and quicker than p*ssing about with paper gaskets and grease. The surfaces have to be de-greased (lol) for it to work. One tip is nearly tighten on assembly then tighten the day after.

hi jaffa ,the paper gaskets i mentioned are the indian heavy duty card type, hence the grease bit i know they work well also i don,t wantany stray sealeant blocking a major artery and causing more exspence as i have more sunk in the old bird than i think its actually worth ,wish i,d bought the guzzi !i could have been going to italy with ogri maybe next year when hopefully i should have a reasonable wedge int pocket ,although i,m not sure how i,d go on with importing all my daily drugs abroad so it might just be a tour of england same old!wife for sale in good knick for an old bird !!starting saving now!! atb paul.

Paul, when I put my crosbred together I used a gasket, but I had also done a lot of crank mods as well. I doubt it will give any endfloat problems. In theory the distance piece between the drive side bearings should be a few thou thicker but I doubt it would cause a problem. I doubt the Indians would have used a different differance piece between the cast engine and the AVL and all the Electra engines were put together with that grey silicone, probably the cause of some engine failures
