I hadn't read this post but a friend mentioned it last night and sugested a loose valve seat. I tend to agree.

Sounds a bit like my mystery clatter which despite a total cylinder head overhaul ( new seats and guides) still pops up every so often. It sounds like a dramatically loose tappet but isn't at an even beat. My plan is to keep riding until it reveals itself in a fundamental fashion because I'm buggeed if I can find out what it is.

Thanks again to all who replied. I have managed to pull my back, old age! so I am in no fit condition to remove the rocker covers which is where the noise is coming from, and as pointed out not the tappets, thank you, I new you new what I meant ! As suggested I think it is a guide or rocker at fault. When I am able to bend down ! will let you know what it is.
