Is it always a problem to find the 'correct' neutral between 1st and 2nd on a Electra X five speed gearbox with the engine running? It also has the habit of finding 'other' neutrals when changing gear on the move. Do I just have to work around this or is there a solution to this problem? I have adjusted the clutch as per workshop manual. Advice please. Graham

More technical folk than me will answer in detail, all I'll say is that mine can be a bit trickier when hot, or in traffic, and I've read before of people (like me) who change from 2nd to neutral as they roll to a stop. Coming back to neutral from 1st seems a bit harder. I suspect false neutrals will disappear with a good strong change, don't be too gentle!

Hi guys----------similar things with the 5-speeder on the Bullet 65. My mate J.( His bike and he's new to Enfields) and I discussed this with the guys at Watsonian Squire at their open week-end recently and the advice given was}---Don't be a woosie with the gearchange.!!.... It seems to be more noticeable when changing DOWN rather than UP. Make of that what you will..............

2nd into neutral seems to work best, 1st will usually jump into 2nd. All of the problem is caused by clutch drag but in some cases it is nearly impossible to fix without modifications but I won't go into that because it can be very fiddley. I was looking at an imaculate Fury on the weekend where the owner had cut a circle out of the outer primary to allow the clutch plates to lift enough. New piece had been welded in and polished and it looked original

I've had the same problem on my Electra x 2007. I've taken out and cleaned all the clutch plates. Adjusted the clutch and clutch cable. It is ok at first but once it is hot it will refuse to go to neutral. The previous owner has allready fitted the '5 clutch plate set' and the 'clutch pad with bearings'. I have spent a lot of time trying to rectify this following all advice and it is a little better but i think it is a case of 'some of them do that sir'!!! Would someone please explain to me what the problem or fault is with the electra gearbox/clutch/setup and how it differs from the 65 say.
Have asked this question in my last post put got no reply.

Cheers Lee B I will follow the advice and post any progress. To be fair to Enfields I have had similar problems with other bikes including a Honda 125. Thanks everyone for the advice. Graham

I'm tempting fate here but the gearbox on my Electra XS has been one of the few trouble-free parts of the bike. It changes positively and I almost always select neutral when coming down from second - even though the handbook says that this isn't possible!!!
If I want to select neutral from first it usually is no problem.
True there are the odd false neutrals but it is no worse than the 'boxes on most of the Jap bikes I've owned and better than a number of then. The same 5 speed 'box on my previous Sixty 5 was just as good as the one on the Kawa GPZ 500s that I traded in in for. What a difference in top-end power though!!!

Just an update - doesn't seem to matter if coming from 1st or 2nd - also not helped by neutral light not always on - ho hum. Graham

Graham, first things first, with the engine off, pull the clutch fully in. Now with your foot on the kickstart push it down a few times, does it feel that the clutch plates are fully seperating and there is no resistance or is there still a slight resistance/ or drag when you do it. Do this when the engine is cold and then when it is hot.
