Hello Pete,
I have a magnet but will not fit it until next week.
I did find some sludge in the hollow recess of the oil tank drain plug. It sounds like the same substance as you have. For what's it worth I am also going to fit a new drain plug with a magnet.
I am not sure of your type of riding but I have found in the past that bikes seldom used or ridden on short journeys tend to have dirtier oil than those ridden on longer runs. Just my tuppence worth.

i can now see i need a magnet i,m really worried i have metal sludge it must have been caused by using wilco 20/50 too regular at £9.00 a gallon honestly i,ve now seen the error of my ways ( my bullet always has clean oil and throws all the magnetic sludge out of the breather onto the rear chain i will now take up magnetism as a religion) Alan can you help? all for £4.00 arise sir magnet thou art my saviour !! sorry to all concerned i,m off for treatment next week!

Grunda 12, if all of the metal bits are going out of your breather then you need to fit the magnet in your breather and not in the engine. Good luck with the new religion.
