The last one that went on mine occurred when i was applying some weight to the kicker, you know how we can just position the piston just past TDC,yes i usually would have used the decompressor.Unfortunately the ign was on and that little fire just before TDC was enough to jam the starter on.And they ain't easy to pull apart when the sprag is locked inside the gearwheel :-(

Personally it effects me nil if sprags work or don't, I have pulled my fair share of them off bikes and binned them, but each to their own and good luck to all who have sucess, but as Jack said, it only takes one mistake and it can be a bin job

I'm curious - is sprag replacement a real pig of a job? I'd be viewing this with some experience in stripping and building old engines (Triumph 500 twin, Honda CB72, Jawa 350, CZ Trials sort of things), and a Dad who is a mechanic, although I am a novice with regard to Enfields and big singles.....and have no special tools if any are needed. Just wondered..... Also, those who have had no sprag problems (and lets be honest, you do seem to be the lucky ones...) - are your bikes standard or fettled? Do they have the "green box"? Let's call these questions forward planning!

Are we the lucky few or is it the case that we don't like tempting providence by saying we haven't had a problem. I've been reading this thread and thought should I post and risk saying mine works fine with no problems. I do believe you need to make sure you ignition is set correctly and always use the decompressor to stop the engine.

Oh well, my electric start works fine. I might as well by a new sprag now.

Just out of curiosity, I had a quick chat with Royal Enfield about the green ECU mentioned on this and various other posts - this is no longer FOC, and costs £54.11 - their thought was that it is something you would replace if you had a problem, but otherwise "should be fine".....2008, 8,600 miles....

Excuse me bringing this thread back to the top, As my replacement sprag failed on it's 1st long ride, and given that I am going to bin the lot, am I actually better off with the original TCI (without the delay on the spark) ??

What exactly happened this time? Either you have put the new sprag back incorrectly or you did not fix the original fault, your bike is still not set up correctly, or starting and stopping procedures are at fault. Did it seriusly kick back at some point.??

A simple stall in traffic, having swapped sides with brake & gearchange, happens to us all at some point, and what fun is a bike when you're paranoid about stalling, knowing that to do so may mean another recovery home ?

I must have stalled my sportsman a dozen times or more just getting out of the gates as we have a very deep gravel drive and easy to do with a 20 tooth gearbox sprocket but I must be apparently very lucky Johnny. Don't give up on the electric start, there are a lot of owners who have had no problems with them at all.

The electric legs are obviously substandard so why keep it. Grunda and I removed all the starter associated bits from mine and what a transformation. An overall weight reduction but more importantly my lean burn now has a flywheel weight reduced by in the region of 500g.How many of the tuners out there would reduce flywheel weight by that amount.I now have an electra that revs quite freely and still gives a proven 96 mpg with big lump riding it .Simples in my opinion.
