The different engines are easy to sort out. The AVL has the same looking bottom end as the iron barrel, but has a different cylinder head. The AVL head is higher in length and has the rocker box caps in a different place. The AVL lump has a 5 speed gearbox as standard, whereas the iron barrel engine has a 4 speed. It's easy to get confused if you don't know the differences.

Barry,
There is a lot of iron barrel Enfields out there with 5 speed box to add to the confusion, that started with the Bullet sixty5

As with all things, there are exceptions to the rule which muddies the water. The Sixty5 (as far as I'm aware) was the first model to be fitted with the 5 speed box as standard. Then there's the bikes that had a change from 4 speed to 5 speed boxes (I'd like one myself).

Ok guys. Thanks for all your advice and comments. It's helped my get an understanding of what i'm going to be up against owning this bike. I managed to get in touch with our good friends here at Hitchcocks and i have been advised the parts book i require is 142145/03a. This is for 2002 - 2005, 350cc/500cc Enfield home market book. Whilst not everything will be a 100% match. They said this is the best book overall as no book was ever produced after this ! So at least i can get a look at a book, that i can be confident has accurate parts for my bike. I will report back with an update once i get the book and order some parts. Thanks. There's a long story behind the 2stageturbo name Alan R ! I've no speed aspirations with regards the Thunderbird. I nearly hit 70mph on a downhill section of motorway last year ! But hey, Thats not what the Enfield experience is about
