Taper: Sounds like a very late Redditch/Indian bike where the motor was built in England then shipped to India to be installed in locally made cycle parts. It was usual at this time to restamp the engine number with an EI (Enfield India) prefix. There is a lot more to tell but we get a lot of folk coming on here for info who never come back, say thanks or acknowledge a reply so if you re-post I (and others,) will be happy to help. Best advice is to join the Royal Enfield Owners Club (£15, can be done online, very cheap by one make Club standards,) who hold the original Factory records and can give you chapter and verse. There are quite a few of these bikes popping up lately, I wonder why? Seriously, join in and be a part of Enfield ownership, we're a good bunch really!

If your a member of the REOC then send them the info, they will date it for you and tell you wether it was a Redditch kit sent to Madras Motors or an 'in-house' Indian one.

The format of the UK engine numbers should be G2/followed by five numbers for 350's and JS/followed by five numbers for a 500. It looks like yours has one digit too many.
I believe that the later engines dropped the G2/ prefix at some stage, but I'm not sure when.
If you look at the photos of the crank cases on the used parts section of this site you will see a couple of crank cases described as post 1956. If yours is a G2 engine it should have a detachable crank case breather held on with the three screws.
If you have any photos on flickr or similar I should be able to give you a better indication.
