OK, so now I am really scared! What is this gloop which goes into the tube to prevent blow-outs?
Does it work? Are there any drawbacks?

as a life long motorcyclist and someone who spent 16 years racing mountain and road bikes (and still cycles) I suggest you just don't think about it. Punctures can and will happen - if you start to think about it too much its time to hang up the wheels (as they say in cycling). I have noted though that punctures often occur when your tyres are pretty worn out anyway so I never let mine get too shagged before replacing them.
