Gentlemen I have found an old Gunsons testune which still seems to be working ok. After a charge overnight the battery was reading just over 12v, still the same after 3 1/2 hours, and no increase in voltage when the bike is running with a slightly raised idle speed. I spoke to the previous owner this morning, who explained why he had fitted the dual reg/recs( better charging capacity) and he diagnosed the problem as the battery not accepting/holding a full charge. I still have to check the alternator with the bike running and will report back.

What am I doing wrong? Could do with someone to come and show me how to test the alternator... I pulled out the black and red wires from the connectors, i.e. the ones that go to reg/rec NO.1 and the multimeter connected on all settings does not give me any useful information. I need to know how to do this!

Peter,
Nothing wrong with the drawings, if it has an Indian stator it should have 2 purple wires an orange and a yellow wire coming from it (from memory) Test across from a purple to yellow and you should get around 30 volts a/c, then test the other purple to the orange and again you should get 30 volts a/c, take both these readings with the motor at above 2000 rpm

Cheers Norm - in fact I have a red and a black wire to one reg/rec & and then orange and yellow wires to the 2nd reg/rec. I tried connecting the red and black to the multimeter with all sorts of configurations but I didn't get anything in the way of understandable readings... what am I doing wrong?

Peter,
With your meter set on A/C you should be getting up to 30 volts A/C across orange yellow and also across black red. If you are using a digital meter it will fluctuate all over the place but it will flick up to the high 20's to the low 30's. I'm not sure how an analogue meter will react as I haven't tried one. These readings will alter with the revs but as you raise the revs the voltage out put should increase. If this occurs on both pairs of wires the stator is ok if on only one set the stator is the problem. If the stator is ok one or both the rec/reg units are then suspect.

Hi guys-------I think I can just s---q---u-----e---e---z---e in here !!...NORM, perhaps PETER might be better-off fitting a Boyer power box in lieu of this "Double-Dekker Device" ??
