Having removed the head and had the valves out for the cleanup, I noticed this

Image

Theres a chunk of material missing from the ally of the head right where the valve seat butts up to the cut head area.
Shouldn't be problematic as it's sealed unless exhausting and doesn't appear to go through to anywhere.
Wondered if anyone had seen anything like this before?

Hi there M1ks ----------- yes, agree with NORM, that's where the de-compressor exhausts out. By the way----don't forget to remove the decompresor valve and give it the same treatment as the other two. You'll see the whole story then.

I was indeed referring to that, I did briefly wonder but wasn't sure if it was intentional or a defect, the only other bike i've had with a decomp lever was the armstrong and that worked by a lever bearing directly on the exhaust valve, and yes, the decomp will be coming out for a lapping too.

Of course now you've said that it should have been incredibly obvious as you hear the pressure escape through the exhaust, duuuh!

Strictly speaking the one on the Armstrong was a valve lifter but I'm just feeling pedantic.
More interesting is how you managed to post an image direct to this board - I've never managed it - do tell.

Wow. It didn't like the big image within frames! But equally, success.

I'd suggest using the HTML thumb code off photobucket which should give a clickable thumbnail:
