I also recommend RealClassic, a proper magazine for people who enjoy rebuild articles as well as riding stories and good background articles and information. And for those who can do t'interweb, I can also point out Paul Grace's new online Royal Enfield magazine, free to view at greenlane.biz and usual disclaimer does not apply as I'm writing up the rebuild of a 350 Bullet from next issue! Read it and see me weep...

I to Subscribe to RC & to Old Bike Fart & MCM When on offer..

But I think The Trouble is Un like in our Youth , When they where written for youth & some Others..Now What can they tell us that we dont Know Or they Told us 4 issues ago,
Classic type Bikes dont change Much...Unlike The Wiz Sales Of Fashion HD or Jap Tour & racers.

I feel they is a Gap in the Market for a really Good Second hand Guide , complected with Rider reviews Like the Original OBM & that other little One...

But YES on The shelf Prices are Daft!! or are they Just there to Make the Subscriptions seem better????

LAST Comment..Some Owners Club Mag's are worth the Sub's for a Riveting read Others Chairman's Report & Sections Pub Lunch are Probably Not..

I rarely buy magazines these days...to expensive, plus to much focus on sportbikes..i.e this years R1 is .77 grams lighter than last years model, and is 2.7 mph faster etc..all irrelevant on todays traffic clogged, speed camera infested roads...the whole purpose of the magazines of course is to convince us to buy new bikes and get ourselves into debt.... not a good idea in the current economic climate! the only decent magazine currently is 'Real Classic' (mail order only) written by enthusiasts Frank Westworth and his better half Rowena Hoeseason, along with probably the best motorcycling journalist of them all Mr Dave Minton who has forgotten more than most of the others will ever know..another good read was 'Motorcycle Voyager' magazine which folded in 2005, good touring coverage on a wide range of bikes, sadly missed

I used to buy Motorcycle Mechanics magazine as I like Jap bikes as well after finding the alternatives all very samey, but gave up due to the price, until very recently I also subscribed to The Riders Digest but stopped that as well as they changed the format and spoilt it, I now use the money I'm saving on petrol, a much wiser choice..

I too gave up on magazines long time ago for similar reasons as posted by other posters and finally gave up on Old Bike Mart due to the bigoted political rants every month by some Mortons Monkey.............
I too endorse RealClassic ( http://www.realclassic.co.uk/ ) it has been my only monthly read from the first issue and will remain so.

great thread the only bike book i buy is the classic motorcycle although mortons media are starting to edge jap bikes in ,i don,t have a problem with jap bikes as they were the vogue when i started riding in the early 80,s but they are not very interesting you can name a hand full and the rest are not worth paying £4.10 a pop for i must say the the reoc gun magazine is a great read although i,m biased be seeing you

Here's a couple - I bought a copy of Classic Bike Guide, it looked pretty good, although that may be because Keith Emerson was featured with his Norton, and I'm a bit of a prog fan.....also my wife brought me Old Bike Australasia from a recent trip to NZ and Oz, which is beautifully printed on quality paper...almost book quality, lucky for those down under.

I agree about the quality read being Real Classic, it seems to suit the experienced and intelligent rider/reader who doesn't want to be patronised by articles on how to adjust a chain! There is a really eclectic mix of articles and no bias against Enfields from India. Big Frank writes a good tale, Graham Ham's articles always make me want to get out and ride and, of course, Dave Minton's musings always demand respect. Motorcycle Sport (without the 'Leisure' if you're old enough!) was the quality read, but like most of the rest, it has 'dumbed down' in order to meet the needs of 'bikers' (hate that word - I'm a MOTORCYCLIST!) There's always a pile of Real Classics and The Gun in our smallest room - required reading!

Try Motor Cycle Monthly it's free at your local bike shop or digitally here http://www.mpldigital.com/mortons-media ... e-monthly/ Totally agree about the amount of japanese bikes in classic mags and I own several Japanese classics? they have thier own mags and you don't see them slipping in Brit bike articles. I remember when Motorcycle Mechanics was a British bike mag it's now wholly Japanese. I to would reccomend Real Classics an enjoyable read.
