Well done. No it does not matter what coil operates the trigger they are both the same although as far as I can see they are in series with each other...so I reckon it was your starting technique after all...ho ho. Don't forget if the problem starts again run discrete wiring to eliminate voltage losses....don't forget if you decide to sell it let me know as my AJS one is the Mk 3...CU.

Les H -
If the coils are in series, wouldn't fitting the pickup plate 180 deg. out have the same effect as transposing the pickup wires ? Or have I got this wrong ?
From what I've read about Boyer ignitions, this would put the timing on full advance, as Dennis C suggested.

Mazeppa -
If you now intend to keep the Boyer, I still feel you should strobe it (or get someone to strobe it for you).
That's what I would do for peace of mind, anyway - but it's up to you, of course.........
If your bike starts without choke and ticks over slowly from cold, it could suggest that your idle mixture is too rich.

Hi John. No there would not be any change in output polarity from the coils. If there was one long bar magnet then there would be, but the rotor consists of two seperate short bar magnets with their poles oriented in the same outward direction. So if they are both set with their north pole outwards and each coil is wound in the same manner with the coils wound in the same direction (which they are) the voltage and polarity produced by each is the same. They are obviously wired + to - in series and the the voltage sums together or doubles. If Mazeppa leaves the wiring the same, as I imagine he has, there will be no difference in the trigger pulse whether it is fitted conventionally or upside down. In fact rotating the face plate has achieved nothing assuming both rotor magnets produce the same flux density. I am convinced that returning the plate to normal will make no difference. I have checked the Boyer info. If the wires are reversed from the magnetic sensor, the ignition becomes 50 degrees retarded not advanced, so as the problem appeared (repeat appeared) to be too advanced then this could not be the problem.
