Been through the primary drive as my very first though was a slapping primary chain, I rebuilt the clutch and trued it up which has made gear changing much easier but hasn't sorted the noise. It does sound incredibly like sticky valves but there is absolutely no loss of performance at any speed.

Sorry you are still stuck with the funny noise. Following your lead, I filmed my EFI from starting for about 60 seconds and sent it to my dealer. He has now invited me over to fix the problem (I also threatened to send a copy to the importers, if he did not take rapid action. Anyway, good luck with your clatter. TrevorCH

Hi TREVOR CH }-----------Nice one there, sir !! Modern bikes, modern technology and a strong, informed customer attitude (in the best, possible way of course) and a result!! I know I bang-on about this particular thing but just because to-days Enfields are based on old designs, we--the owners----don't have to emulate old commercial attitudes of the past. Also, given your particular geographic situation then DOUBLE bonus points to you as well. OK,I'm gone now-----------Alan R

Hi Simon...this is probably wildly off beam and I expect to get widely derided for this, but your mystery "clack" sounds very like a problem I had with my 500 Classic a few years ago. When waiting at traffic lights or junctions, the idle would be interrupted by an occasional, random "clank" or "clack", rather as if someone were occasionally hitting the cylinder head with a small mallet at random intervals. Running and power otherwise were totally unaffected. The funny thing about this sound was that it came and went...some days it would be very intrusive, then it would disappear for a few days or even weeks, but always came back. Like you, I tried everything, then...I filled up with BP "Ultimate". No recurrence. I used a few tanks of this stuff, and don't seem to have had a recurrence since. I do not explain, I merely record.

Cheers

Is it coming from the head area? Last time I heard a noise like that was on my ural, turned out to be a valve guide floating randomly up and down in the head

I'm too mystified to deride anyone Tim and your description fits my issue precisely. It sort of ties in with Zippy's post in that if the Ultimate has a better upper cylinder lubrication it might reduce the propensity for a valve guide to float. It certainly sounds like something of that nature, anyway thank you all for your thoughts. I will persist until I find the problem.

Another good thought. My latest plan is to hopefully be in a position to stop the motor the minute that it starts clacking next and check all the various tolerances etc. The trouble being that by the time I've started a diagnostic disassembly the noise has stopped and all looks perfect.

Thought Id refresh this ancient post in the light of another with a mystery noise and take the opprtunity to acknowledge Les H's correct diagnosis which I completely missed at the time. Tim G's cure make perfect sense in retrospect because it was probably a lighter grade of oil that stopped the slip. Drove me crazy ad cost me a fortune in unnecessary repairs but thats old bikes for you!
