chaps, magneto is defintely stamped K2F and there is a manual advance/retard lever on lh handlebar. But i still say sprocket is too big to remove thru aperture. Well, if I have a self extracting sprocket then that will be pretty obvious when i try to undo. If it doesnt come off then I will need the tool, thanks for the offer of a loan, I will report back when I have a go at undoing the retaining nut. thanks again.

Probably a silly question, have you ridden this bike and if so what have you been doing with the advance/ retard lever? Very obvious if you have an auto advance because it has bob weights and springs on it. Chain runs on the inside of this and it has to be removed so you can get the chain off. If it just has a sprocket, undo the three screws holding the maggie on, lift it up and take the chain off and remove the maggie

Ok chaps, please find below a link (which you may have to copy and paste) to a photograph of the mag as taken from timing cover side. Are you able to tell from this what I need to do? In answer to Norm, no I have not ridden the bike yet and cannot see any bob weights and springs. The advance /retard lever does not feel sprung loaded if that makes any sense? the rider determines its position. Many thanks.

Mr CO, (so formal!) that picture is of the manual advance retard sprocket. You need to undo the center nut then apply the puller. You could make one: find 2 bolts with the same cross section as the gap between the sprocket teeth. The heads of the bolts go behind the sprocket teeth with the threads pointing outwards. You now need a crossbar to join the bolts, in the centre of this you'll need a threaded hole with another bolt passing through which will bear on the end of the magneto spindle. Tighten bolt, sprocket pops off. Simples!

If it is just a sprocket you shouldn't have to remove the sprocket, just undo the three screws holding the maggie on, chain will go loose, lift the outside of the maggie up on an angle, lift the chain off and remove the maggie

Bless you gents, my name is Richard by the way although I quite like Mr Co! I think on balance it will need a puller as you may have noticed from the photo, the retaining nuts cannot be unscrewed completly as they foul on the back of the chain before they get to the end of the studs. What the photo doesnt clearly show is that the gap between the back of the chain and the end of the three studs is only a couple of mm and of course the retaining nuts are much deeper than that. So, the missus is away tomorrow which means I have all day to tinker, i will let you know how I get on thanks richard.

ps I should have also made clear that i have made an assumption(i know, i know!) that the three fixing nuts that hold the magneto on are the three pictured on the inside of the timing cover and not the three larger hex nuts on the back of the timing cover? One of these nuts on the back is nigh on impossible to get at without getting the mag off which is why I assume the fixing nuts are the inside ones. Hope thats clear.

Richard, the magneto is bolted to a circular adaptor plate which is in turn bolted to the crankcase, you can release the whole assembly or leave the adaptor ring in place depending on whether you can get to the bolts or not!

aah, thanks Mark, i wondered if that circular plate was some sort of adapter. Unfortunatly i dont think there is any way of getting a spanner or socket on to one of the bolts right at the bottom as it is obscured in part by the body of the Magneto. Glad I'm not going mad...

Just a quick update, I have removed the sprocket retaining nut this morning and there is a female thread on the inside for a puller. So as the tool is only a tenner I will order one from Hitchcocks and give that a go, thanks for all your help and support chaps, its been a long time since i tinkered with bikes and so lacking a little confidence, i have no doubt I will be back again soon....cannot wait to hear this beauty fire up after 30 years!!
