Hi Alan, I doubt you would be able to hear it, the problem is that the sprocket has a taper on it so the surface area where it is up against the distance piece is small so if there is any movement it can quickly wear. Next problem is it isn't easy to get that distance piece out without removing the oil seal, not that that is a big deal but it pays to have a seal and distance piece on hand when you pull it down just to be sure. And if you do have a seal and distance piece on hand, Murphys law says you will never need it. I just call it cheap insurance. This is why when riding I carry so many spares, because the ones you carry are the ones you never need
